Youth Focus: Oakland’s Future

YOUTH FOCUS: OAKLAND’S FUTURE is a show produced by Media Enterprise Alliance, an OUSD accredited media program, and KDOL-TV to foster civic participation and leadership in youth. The production of the show employs professionals in broadcast journalism to mentor MEA students, and teach them the skills required to produce a one-hour television broadcast. The show is taped and broadcast at the KDOL-TV studio in Oakland. KDOL-TV is the Oakland Unified School District educational access television station. The station affiliates are Comcast Channel 27 and AT&T 99.

The students meet quarterly to develop topics affecting youth in Oakland. This is a unique opportunity for youth media and leadership groups in Oakland to meet each other, share their concerns about issues affecting youth in Oakland, and participate in a forum with civic leaders with the goal to become actively involved in public policy.

Youth Focus is sponsored by KDOL-TV, and its student media program – Media Enterprise Alliance (MEA).  The co-producers are:  Sherry Hu, former CBS-5/KPIX reporter and now director of ONews, the OUSD web and news site for, by and about its students; Mario Capitelli, Station Manager, KDOL-TV; and Jeff Key, MEA Executive Director.

During 2011-12 the following Oakland youth media organizations, OUSD media students, and youth leadership organizations participated in Youth Focus:Youth Radio (Youth Media International), Bay Area Video Coalition/The Factory, Youth Roots/Oakland Leaf, Youth Uprising, Youth Speaks, East Bay Asian Youth Center, Eastside Arts Alliance, United Roots/Green Youth Arts & Media Center, Youth Movement Records/Oakland School of the Arts, Youth Alive, Youth Together, All-City Council, the Oakland Youth Advisory Commission, Media Enterprise Alliance at KDOL-TV, Media Academy at Fremont High, Oakland Tech, Envision Academy, Oakland High, Skyline High, Oakland International High, and Castlemont High .
